Do not just write 'food contact' or 'needs to be durable.' Write down the real conditions.
For a cutting board, that means temperatures, cleaning chemicals, knife blade geometry, and whether the board will sit in a dishwasher. For a TPU coating, add UV exposure, salt water, flexing at low temperature, and abrasion from rough surfaces.
In July 2022, I specified a silicone coating for a high-flex canvas product because silicone had better heat resistance. The coating started peeling after six weeks. I had ignored the actual failure mode: constant rubbing against a rough frame, not heat. A TPU coating would have handled it. That was my assumption error. Now the question 'what is the actual failure mode?' comes first.
Step 2: Get Material Data, Not a Marketing Pitch

Step 3: Compare Three Numbers That Actually Matter
TPU generally sits in a range from soft 70 Shore A to hard 90 Shore D. It usually offers excellent abrasion resistance and good low-temperature flexibility. Silicone is often softer, more compressible, and has a wider continuous service temperature range–especially on the high side–but it can tear or abrade faster in some applications.
For a TPU vs silicone cutting board comparison, a mid-hard TPU board gives a firmer cutting surface. Silicone can be more flexible and heat-resistant. Neither is automatically right. It depends on use, cleaning, and customer expectations.
For coated fabrics, the difference is even starker. A TPU coating often wins on abrasion, low-temperature flexibility, and weldability. Silicone coating often wins when the fabric has to survive sustained high heat. I am not 100% sure about every formulation, but in general those trends hold.

Step 4: Test the Actual Sample in Your Actual Process
In October 2022, I was helping a customer compare a silicone mat and a TPU mat for a food-production line. The silicone mat tested beautifully in a lab. In the facility, cutting blades wore through the surface in three days. The lab test had not used the same blade geometry, pressure, or cleaning cycle.
So before you commit:
- Get samples of the exact formulation.
- Run them on the actual equipment or with the actual end user.
- Wash them the way your customer will wash them.
- Drop them, bend them, scratch them, and check them after a week of hard use.
And beware the online hype. There is a whole TPU army on the internet that will tell you TPU is indestructible. It is not. Silicone is not indestructible either. The only way to know for your product is to test it.
Step 5: Count the Total Cost, Not Just the Unit Price
This is the step I wish I had internalized in 2019. The lowest unit price is almost never the lowest total cost.
My formula is simple:
Total Cost = unit price x quantity + tooling or molds + setup charges + shipping + testing + potential rework + delays that affect your own production.
Here is a real example. A silicone cutting board was quoted at $2.80 per unit. The TPU version was $3.20 per unit. The silicone supplier needed a $1,200 mold fee and six weeks to produce a two-color logo. The TPU supplier could produce the same design without the mold fee and in three weeks. On a 5,000-unit order, the all-in cost was $3.04 for silicone and $3.20 for TPU. The silicone quote looked cheaper, but the lower number did not survive contact with reality. I kept asking myself: is $0.40 per unit worth the risk of late delivery and double handling? It was not.
In Q3 2024, I ran the same total cost analysis on four fabric coaters. The highest quoted unit price was 22% above the lowest. The lowest-quote vendor had a $300 sample-matching fee, slow technical support, and a hidden packaging charge. The total cost of working with them was actually higher. A quote is not a cost.
Step 6: Verify the Supply Chain, Minimums, and Lead Time
Before you tell anyone 'we are going with TPU,' answer these questions:
- What is the minimum order quantity?
- How long is the lead time?
- Where is the material actually produced?
- Is there an equivalent second source?
- Does the vendor keep replacement stock?
A low per-unit price with a huge minimum quantity is a false economy. A high-performance material available only from one factory is a supply-chain risk. In September 2022, a rush order was delayed because the only factory with the approved material was closed for a national holiday. That mistake cost $890 in redo work and one week of schedule pressure.

If you are buying a Pirelli brand rubber or TPU product, you want a traceable source with a datasheet. An unofficial reseller can still have genuine goods, but traceability is weaker. Do not write 'same as sample.' Write:

- Abrasion test standard and minimum result
- Food-contact standard and certificate requirement
- Cleaning chemical compatibility list
- Thickness tolerance and dimensions
- Country of origin, packaging, and traceability requirements
In April 2023, I had a supplier send a production batch that 'matched the approved sample' in appearance but failed a simple folding test. The purchase spec only said 'black, same as sample.' There was no documented fold requirement. My mistake, not theirs. Now every empty slot on our spec sheet gets filled before I sign.

- 'Same specifications' across vendors means same performance. It does not. Each manufacturer has different formulations and different quality tolerances.
