Yes, TPU is polyurethane. Thermoplastic polyurethane—the name pretty much gives it away. Its molecular backbone contains urethane linkages, so it belongs to the broader polyurethane family, but it behaves like a thermoplastic elastomer rather than a traditional thermoset polyurethane.
But if you're searching "is TPU polyurethane" because you're sourcing rubber webbing, black rubber strip, or 90A TPU and trying to figure out what you're actually buying—the chemical name won't save you from a bad purchase order.
It won't tell you whether that batch will hold up at -30°C, whether the hardness is consistent across lots, or whether the supplier's "90A TPU" label means measured Shore A or wishful thinking on a spec sheet.

We eventually found a manufacturer who actually runs in-process hardness checks on every batch—not just one sample per lot.
