At least once a month, somebody sends a request that starts the same way: "Should we use TPU or PVC for our rubber mat flooring?" Or: "We need TPE rubber webbing straps—can you match this sample?"
I get it. Material selection feels like the big decision. But after years of reviewing hundreds of items as a quality and brand compliance manager at Pirelli, I can tell you: that's the wrong first question. Period.
The Question Everyone Asks vs. The One They Should Ask
The question everyone asks is "TPU or PVC?" The question they should ask is: "What does this thing actually need to withstand?" Because TPU, PVC, and the broader category of TPE rubber all have different strengths—and different failure modes.
Here's where the confusion starts. "TPE rubber" isn't one material. It's an umbrella term for a family of polymers. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is one branch. PVC gets pulled into the same conversation all the time, but it's not even a rubber. And a lot of what's sold as "rubber flooring" today is PVC-based. That's fine, as long as nobody assumes it will behave like a TPU floor.
Why does this matter? Because well-intentioned buyers who ask "TPU or PVC?" often end up comparing samples that couldn't be more different in performance, even though they look identical in a photo. I've seen two "equivalent" rubber mats—both labeled industrial-grade TPE—with abrasion resistance that differed by 400%. Same name. Not the same product.
Why are TPU and PVC so often framed as rivals? Both can be processed on similar machinery, and both can be formulated to feel flexible and rubber-like. PVC is often cheaper per pound, which makes it attractive for budget-minded projects. TPU tends to be tougher, more tear-resistant, and more tolerant of temperature extremes. That's a reasonable starting frame. But if you buy solely based on that generalization, you'll miss the cases where a well-formulated PVC outperforms a poorly formulated TPU for a specific application.
Why "It's Rubber" Means Nothing Anymore
This was true 15 years ago. If you asked for "rubber," most suppliers knew you meant natural rubber or SBR. That world is gone. Today you have synthetic rubber compounds, TPE blends, recycled rubber content, and PVC heavily loaded with plasticizers. They're different animals.
Most buyers focus on material type and completely miss the specs that determine whether a rubber floor survives five years or fails in eighteen months:
- Hardness (Shore A)—a 60A mat and an 80A mat feel, wear, and grip entirely differently.
- Abrasion resistance—not a vague "good" but a number with a test standard (e.g., ASTM D4060).
- Tear and tensile strength—essential for rubber webbing straps and any loaded rubber part.
- Flame and smoke rating—usually tied to a building code, not a preference.
- Chemical and UV resistance—for industrial environments where the floor will see oils, solvents, or sunlight.
I said "industrial grade" on an order once. The supplier heard "whatever their standard process produces." Result? A batch of 8,000 rubber floor tiles passed every visual check but failed the smoke density test at 25% above the permitted limit.
The Real Problem Is Vague Specification
This is where the deep dive points: the material name is a shortcut that has no direct correlation with performance. Two different TPU formulations can have hardness within 5 points on the Shore A scale but tear strength that varies by a factor of two. Talk to a rubber compounder and they'll tell you the same thing. The polymer is the starting point, not the finish line.
There's a compliance angle too. Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims need substantiation. If a "sustainable" rubber mat isn't backed by a clear explanation of what makes it sustainable, that's a legal risk for the buyer and seller. We do sustainability reporting at Pirelli. It has actual data behind it. A supplier who just says "eco-friendly" should be willing to put a number next to that claim. If they can't, that's a red flag.
The Replacement Cost Is Far Higher Than the Purchase Price
Let's say the rubber mat flooring itself runs $2–4 per square foot (based on a January 2025 survey of industrial suppliers—verify current rates). The installed cost is typically two to three times that, once you include adhesive, subfloor prep, and labor.
That rejected tile batch cost $22,000 in rework and delayed a commercial project by six weeks. The original order said "TPE rubber flooring" and nothing about smoke performance. That's on the spec, not just the supplier. If the flooring fails early after installation, the replacement requires stripping everything out and redoing the subfloor. A "great deal" on poorly specified material can easily end up costing more than a better material priced at the outset. Simple.
The same logic applies to rubber webbing straps. I once reviewed a batch of webbing straps where the supplier's data sheet listed "600 kg breaking strength." Great. But the test method differed from the ISO standard we used, and it was tested on a new, dry sample, not after UV exposure. In the field, a strap that sits on a truck deck for a year gets UV-degraded before it gets fully loaded. The spec didn't account for that. Nobody had checked. A tensile failure there isn't a nuisance—it's a safety issue.
What to Specify Instead of "TPU" or "PVC"
Stop leading with the material. Lead with the operating conditions, then the required physical properties, then let the supplier propose a material that meets them.
- Give the environment. Indoors or outdoors? Wet, oily, exposed to solvents or UV? What traffic—pedestrian, forklift, vehicles?
- Define performance numerically. Hardness, abrasion loss limit, tear strength, flame spread and smoke index if a building code applies.
- Ask for the test report. Not a generic data sheet—the actual lab report for that production batch.
- Name the test standard explicitly. Do this to avoid honestly confusing mismatches like the tensile test I mentioned earlier. Same words, different units: it happens.
- Get a physical sample for a pilot area. This one step has saved my team from at least three bad orders. It costs less than a redo.

But don't read that as "you should buy Pirelli for everything." We're the first to say that if you need a simple entrance mat for a lobby with light foot traffic, a premium engineered spec is overkill—the material name hardly matters at all. The honest answer is that not every application requires this level of rigor.
However, the moment there's a load, a safety standard, or a regulatory requirement behind that rubber product, the material name is just the beginning, not the decision. Write the spec around the problem, and the material question often answers itself.
That's the whole trick. Everything else is quality control.
